Did you know that The Urbana Free Library has tons of old soul, neo-soul, retro-soul, and r&b? Check out some of these great titles:
From the amazing Daptone records: DAPTONE GOLD compilation. Daptone is a label owned and operated by Sharon Jones of the Dap Kings. Specializing in retro and African soul, Daptone has raised the bar in terms of collecting, recording, and promoting some of the best contemporary artists that specialize in 50's and 60's style soul music. This compilation is a great place to start exploring what the label had to offer. Sharon herself is one of the best singers I've ever heard, as evidenced by this outstanding performance at Bonnaroo this year.. Check out the Daptone website to hear samples from this collection.
Anthony Hamilton has worked in various styles, particularly modern R&B and an amalgamation of new and old school soul. Check out the video for one of his most popular songs "Can't let you go". Hamilton has been around the scene for awhile, and The Urbana Free Library owns all of his records. Start with his 2005 hit Ain't nobody worryin' [sound recording] / Anthony Hamilton.
Baduizm Erykah Badu burst into the music world with this incredible album in 1997. Baduizm serves as a landmark album in the neo soul genre, as it helped develop its popularity and commercial visibility at the time of the album's release. Super mellow!
The miseducation of Lauryn Hill [sound recording].
A crucial and influential component of the neo soul sub-genre, this album
has appeared on numerous accolade lists, with many past and
contemporary critics regarding it as one of the greatest albums of the
1990s, as well as one of the greatest albums of all time. SOOOOO good.
Also check out Angie Stone (Stone love), ,The complete Stax Volt singles, 1959-1968, Eccentric soul the Big Mack label, the Revelations, Johnnie Taylor (The very best of Johnnie Taylor) and more at The Urbana Free Library!
